Memory foam gets all the attention, but wool and natural fill pillows have been quietly winning over people who sleep hot, care about chemicals in their bedding, or just want something that doesnt go flat after 6 months. The catch is theyre harder to shop for because most people havent tried one and dont know what to expect.

We’ve tested four natural fill pillows from two brands and ranked them based on comfort, temperature regulation, and how well they hold up over time. All four are legitimately good but they serve different sleepers.

Organic Merino Temperature Regulating Top Pick
This is the pillow that converted me from memory foam. The merino wool fill naturally wicks moisture and regulates temperature in a way synthetic materials just cant match. It sleeps cool in summer without feeling cold in winter. The loft is medium, which works for back and side sleepers. It does compress over time like any natural fill but you can fluff it back pretty easily. At around $80 its not cheap compared to synthetic pillows but its significantly less than most organic options. The GOTS certified organic wool is a nice bonus if that matters to you.

Adjustable Fill Hugely Popular
Not technically a wool pillow but it earns a spot here because its the best alternative if you want adjustability. The Coop lets you unzip it and add or remove shredded memory foam fill until the loft is exactly right for your sleep position. With 65,000+ reviews on Amazon its one of the most popular pillows period. Its not as breathable as pure wool and it doesnt regulate temperature quite as well, but the ability to customize the height is something no wool pillow offers. Great for side sleepers who need more loft than most pillows provide.

Adjustable Wool Budget Pick
The myWoolly gives you the temperature regulation of wool with the adjustability of the Coop. Unzip it, pull out some wool fill if its too high, add it back if you want more support. The wool isnt organic merino like the myMerino above, which is why its cheaper, but it still breathes better than any memory foam pillow. Good entry point if you want to try wool without spending $80+. Stays cool all night even in warm rooms.

Sleep & Beyond myDual Side Pillow

Dual Sided Natural Fill
Interesting concept here. One side is wool fill, the other is organic cotton. Flip it depending on the season or your mood. The wool side is loftier and warmer, the cotton side is flatter and cooler. Its adjustable too with a zippered opening. In practice, I found myself using the cotton side most of the time in warmer months and switching to wool when it got cold. Not as plush as the myMerino but the versatility is a nice touch for people who can never quite decide what they want from a pillow.

Why Wool Over Memory Foam?

Wool does three things memory foam cant. It wicks moisture away from your skin (memory foam traps it). It regulates temperature naturally so you dont get that hot then cold cycle in the middle of the night. And it resists dust mites without any chemical treatment. The downside is wool pillows need fluffing more often and they dont have that squishy conforming feel that memory foam fans love.

If you sleep hot, wool is worth trying before you buy a cooling gel pillow. It might solve the problem without any of the gimmicks.
