Side sleepers have a specific problem. Most mattresses are too firm at the shoulder and hip, which means pressure points wake you up and your spine drifts out of neutral. The fix isn’t always a new mattress. A good topper does it for under $100 most of the time.

The catch is that toppers vary wildly. Some are too thin to actually fix anything. Others are dense memory foam that traps heat. Heres what we’d actually buy under the $100 line for side sleeping in 2026.

Cooling Gel Pressure Relief Best Seller
Two inches is the right depth for most side sleepers, enough to absorb shoulder and hip pressure without sinking so far you feel stuck. The gel infusion isnt magic but it does keep heat from building up the way pure memory foam does. We have a full deep dive review on this one.

3 Inch Profile Bamboo Cover Side Sleeper Friendly
If your current mattress is too firm and you weigh more than about 180 lb, the 2 inch version wont be enough. Step up to 3 inches. The Bedsure has a removable bamboo blend cover which makes it easier to keep clean. The cooling gel is real, the marketing copy isn’t.

Plush Top Supportive Base Two Layers
Two inches of soft pillow top quilting on two inches of denser gel foam underneath. That second layer is what keeps you from bottoming out, which is the failure mode for cheap thick toppers. Just barely sneaks under the $100 line at most retailers. Heaviest pick on this list.

Pillow Top Feel Side Sleeper Removable Cover
If you find pure memory foam too firm or hot, the ViscoSoft adds a quilted pillow top layer that gives a softer immediate feel. Underneath is still gel memory foam for support, so you arent giving up the pressure relief. Good middle ground for picky sleepers.

Budget Pick Lavender Scent Light Sleeper
The lavender thing is mostly marketing, the smell mellows out within a couple weeks. What matters is the foam is usable for the price. Not as cooling as the Linenspa, but if youre just trying to soften an aggressively firm mattress without spending much, this works. We’d still recommend the Linenspa as upgrade if you can.

How to Pick the Right Thickness

Side sleepers under 150 lb usually do fine with 2 inches. Between 150 and 200 lb, 3 inches feels noticeably better. Over 200 lb, go 4 inches and look for a dual layer construction so you dont bottom out on the mattress underneath.

If your mattress is already medium soft and youre adding cushion just for shoulder relief, 2 inches is plenty. If your mattress feels like a board, you’ll want 3 to 4 inches.

Cooling Notes

Memory foam traps heat. Period. Gel infusion helps a little but its not magic, dont expect it to feel like a cold sheet. If you sleep hot and the cooling matters more than pressure relief, look at our cooling sheet recommendations first, then add the topper. The combination is what works.
