Sleep & Beyond myMerino Topper Review

Organic merino wool topper tested through 3 weeks of spring temperature swings
Snooze Geek Team · April 2026
8.3/10
The myMerino Topper from Sleep & Beyond turned our firm mattress into something we actually looked forward to climbing into at night. The 1.5-inch layer of organic merino wool adds just enough cushion to smooth out pressure points without making the bed feel mushy. What really stood out was the temperature regulation — wool naturally wicks moisture and adjusts to your body heat, so nights that were too warm or too cool with our old polyester topper felt much more balanced. The cotton percale cover is soft and breathable, and the whole thing is machine washable, which matters a lot for something sitting directly under your sheet. The price is higher than synthetic alternatives, but if you sleep hot or want something made from natural materials, this justifies the investment.

Our Take After Three Weeks

We placed the myMerino on top of a medium-firm memory foam mattress and the change was immediately noticeable. The wool created a softer landing when getting into bed, but unlike foam toppers that sink and trap heat, this one kept a breathable, springy feel. Pressing a hand into it, you feel the wool compress evenly and then slowly recover — it does not bounce back instantly like latex, but it does not stay compressed like cheap polyester either.

The temperature regulation claim turned out to be the real story. During our testing period, overnight temperatures ranged from 55 to 72 degrees. Nights that would normally have us kicking off blankets felt cooler under the same comforter with the wool topper. Cooler nights felt warmer than expected. This is the wool doing what wool does — it absorbs moisture when you sweat and releases it as conditions change, creating a natural buffering effect.

Sleeping positions mattered. Back sleepers got the most benefit since the topper smoothed pressure across the entire spine. Side sleepers noticed improved hip comfort, though people over 200 lbs said they could feel the mattress through the topper at the shoulder and hip. Stomach sleepers did not report much difference, which makes sense given the thinner profile.

We washed it once at the end of week two following the care instructions — gentle cycle, cold water, laid flat to dry. It took about 24 hours to dry fully, which is the one inconvenience. Post-wash, the loft returned to normal and there was no clumping or uneven spots. The cotton cover did not shrink.

Pros and Cons

What We Liked

  • Temperature regulation genuinely works through variable spring nights
  • Organic materials throughout — GOTS-certified wool and cotton
  • Adds cushion without the trapped-heat problem of foam toppers
  • Machine washable with no clumping after washing
  • Elastic bands held firmly on our 14-inch mattress

Where It Falls Short

  • Higher price than synthetic toppers ($200+ for Queen)
  • 1.5 inches may not be enough for heavier sleepers on firm beds
  • Takes a full day to air dry after washing
  • Slight wool scent for the first 2-3 days

Common Questions

Will it make my firm mattress feel soft?

It adds a noticeable cushion layer, but 1.5 inches of wool will not transform a rock-hard mattress into a plush one. Think of it as taking the edge off firmness rather than completely changing the feel. If your mattress is uncomfortably hard, you might want a thicker topper.

Does it smell like wool?

There is a faint natural wool scent for the first couple of days. It is mild and not unpleasant — similar to a new wool sweater. By day 3 in our test, we could not detect it anymore.

How does wool compare to memory foam for sleep?

Wool regulates temperature far better than memory foam, which tends to trap body heat. Memory foam contours more precisely to your body shape, while wool provides a more general cushioning effect. If you sleep hot, wool wins. If you need targeted pressure relief for joint pain, memory foam may serve you better.
