Key Features

😴

Sleep Stage Tracking

Monitors light, deep, and REM sleep throughout the night. The app breaks it down with timestamps so you can see exactly when you hit deep sleep.

💓

24/7 Heart Rate & SpO2

Tracks heart rate and blood oxygen around the clock. Useful for catching trends you’d miss with a once a day spot check.

🔓

No Subscription Required

Every feature is available from day one. No monthly fee, no premium tier, no paywall. Thats a big deal when competitors charge $6 to $7 a month.

🔋

5 Day Battery Life

Lasts about 4 to 5 days on a single charge depending on how many features you leave running. Charges back to full in roughly an hour.

Our Experience

We wore the Free Shark ring for two full weeks, sleeping with it every night and wearing it during the day for step and heart rate data. The fit is comfortable enough that you forget its there after the first night. Its lighter than the Oura Ring and sits flatter on the finger, which we actually preferred.

Sleep tracking was the main reason we picked this up. The data lined up reasonably well with what our Oura Gen 3 reported on the same nights. Deep sleep totals were within about 10 to 15 minutes of each other most nights. REM detection was a little less consistent, sometimes the Free Shark would show 20 more minutes of REM than the Oura, but at this price point thats not something we’d complain about.

The app is basic but functional. You get a sleep score each morning, a breakdown of your sleep stages, and weekly trend charts. Its not as polished as the Oura app and it doesnt have the coaching features or readiness scores. But honestly? For $50 with zero recurring costs, this delivers about 80% of what a $300 ring with a $72 per year subscription gives you. If all you want is reliable sleep stage data and heart rate trends without paying forever, this is hard to beat.

Pros & Cons

What We Liked

  • No subscription ever. All features unlocked out of the box
  • Sleep stage tracking that closely matched our Oura Ring data
  • Comfortable enough to sleep in without noticing it
  • Under $50, which is a fraction of what Oura or Samsung charges

Worth Knowing

  • App is basic and lacks coaching, readiness scores, or guided insights
  • REM detection was occasionally off by 15 to 20 minutes vs our reference device
  • Charging cradle is magnetic but not super strong, it can slip off if bumped

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know what size to order?

Free Shark includes a sizing kit with plastic test rings. Wear the test ring for a full day before ordering since your fingers change size throughout the day.

Can I wear it in the shower?

Yes. Its IP68 rated so showers and hand washing are fine. Wouldnt recommend swimming with it though since the manufacturer only rates it for brief submersion.

Does it track naps?

It does detect naps automatically if you sleep for more than about 20 minutes. Shorter rest periods dont always register though.

How accurate is the sleep tracking compared to Oura?

In our testing, deep sleep totals were within 10 to 15 minutes of the Oura Ring on most nights. REM was less consistent. For the price difference its surprisingly close.

Final Verdict

The Free Shark Smart Ring delivers where it counts for sleep tracking: accurate enough sleep stage data, comfortable all night wear, and zero recurring costs. It wont replace an Oura Ring if you care about readiness scores, temperature trending, or a premium app experience. But if you’ve been putting off getting a sleep tracker because you dont want another monthly subscription, this ring removes that barrier completely. At $50 its low risk enough to try, and the sleep data it gives you is genuinely useful for understanding your patterns. The charging cradle could be better and the app needs work, but for the price? Solid buy.
