I’ve been testing the Sleep and Beyond myMerino mattress topper for about three weeks now, and the thing that keeps surprising me is how it handles temperature. Wool toppers have a reputation for sleeping warm but merino is different. This one actually breathes, and it manages to feel cozy in an air conditioned room without trapping heat when the AC cycles off at night.
Sleep & Beyond myMerino Topper
GOTS certified organic merino wool mattress topper. Machine washable, naturally temperature regulating, available in Twin through Cal King.
~$250 (Queen)
Why Merino Instead of Memory Foam
Memory foam toppers are everywhere and they’re cheap. But they all share the same problem: heat retention. Even the ones marketed as “cooling” tend to trap body heat after a few hours. Merino wool fibers are naturally hollow, which means they wick moisture away from your skin and allow air to circulate. You dont wake up in a sweat puddle at 3am.
The trade off is firmness. This isnt a plush sink into it kind of topper. Its about 1.5 inches of dense wool batting that adds a soft cushion layer without changing the overall feel of your mattress much. If your mattress is too firm, this takes the edge off. If its already soft, this might not be the right move.
The Organic Certification Actually Means Something
Sleep and Beyond holds GOTS certification on the myMerino line, which means the wool and the cotton shell meet organic standards from farm through finished product. A lot of “organic” bedding brands use the word loosely, so the GOTS label is worth paying attention to. No chemical flame retardants, no synthetic additives.
Machine Washable Is a Bigger Deal Than You Think
Most wool toppers are dry clean only or spot clean at best. The myMerino is machine washable on gentle cycle with cold water. I’ve washed it twice so far and it came out fine. No clumping, no shrinkage. For something that sits against your skin every night, being able to actually wash it matters more than most product specs.
Three Weeks In: Sleep Quality
My Oura Ring data showed a small but consistent bump in deep sleep percentage after switching to this topper. We’re talking about 5 to 8 minutes more deep sleep per night, which lines up with what I’d expect from better temperature regulation. Not a dramatic change but the kind of thing that adds up over weeks.
The biggest difference I noticed personally was fewer wake ups. I’m a light sleeper who usually wakes 2 to 3 times per night, and that dropped to 1 to 2 on average. Could be placebo. Could be the wool. Hard to say for certain, but the trend held for three straight weeks so I’m inclined to give the topper some credit.
What I Wish Was Different
The price. At $250 for a Queen, this costs more than most foam toppers and some budget mattresses. You’re paying for organic certification and quality materials, which I think is worth it, but its still a lot to spend on a topper. Also, it takes 2 to 3 days to fully decompress and air out after unboxing. Theres a mild wool smell at first that goes away.

- ✅ Machine washable on gentle cycle
- ✅ GOTS certified organic, no chemical treatments
- ✅ Durable, doesnt clump or flatten
- ✅ Good for hot and cold sleepers
Cons
- ❌ Pricey at $250 for Queen size
- ❌ Not plush enough if you want a sink in feel

Who This Is For
Hot sleepers who’ve given up on memory foam. People who care about organic materials and want the certification to back it up. Anyone whose mattress is slightly too firm and wants a breathable cushion layer without replacing the whole bed. At $250, its not cheap, but its the kind of purchase that pays off over a few years of better sleep.
