Why A Mechanical Fan Still Beats A Speaker

Digital machines play a recording. However long the file is, it ends and starts again, and your brain is very good at spotting the joint even when you cant consciously hear it. The Dohm has no file. There’s a small motor spinning air inside a two piece housing, so the noise it makes is genuinely random, forever. Thats the entire argument for it and its a good one.

You shape the sound by twisting the outer collar and tilting the vents. Rotate one way and it gets deeper and rounder. The other way opens it up into something closer to rushing air. There are two speeds and thats your whole control scheme. No screen, no app, no timer, no bluetooth.

Where It Falls Short

Volume ceiling is lower than a lot of digital units. If you’re masking a barking dog two doors down or a partner who snores loudly, the Dohm may not have enough on tap. It also cant do rain, ocean, brown noise or any of the other options people expect now. White noise is all it makes. It draws mains power only, so no battery, no travel use unless you’re packing an adapter. And the motor is a moving part. Most last years, some develop a rattle or a bearing whine and once that starts theres no fixing it.
